When it comes to one’s backyard, everyone wants a space where they can relax and enjoy, whether it is to hang out with friends and family during a backyard barbeque or just to lay out and enjoy a good book. If you are not pleased with your backyard space most likely you will not enjoy or use your backyard space. For this project in South MiamiFlorida, relaxation and enjoyment was just what we were trying to achieve for this space.
Our first scope of work for the project was the demolition and the irrigation. We removed several Sabal Palmetto, 20 DIA, 8′ HT, 16′ CNPY and Coconut Palms, Coco Nucifera, 14 DIA, 32′ HT, 19′ CNPY along with existing sod and shrubby. We re-designed the entire backyard irrigation system using 1” valves and 1804® Series Spray heads to accommodate the new landscaping. We also switched out the analog irrigation controller to a Rainbird irrigation controller and added a rain sensor. Landscape lighting wiring was also run during the installation of the irrigation to light up the Wild Date Palm / Phoenix Sylvestris and water feature.
We also extended the patio by 620 square feet as a result, we made the patio larger, more luxurious, and more cozy. A well-designed patio will not only add extra living space to your home, but also add to the resale value by becoming a focal point of activity geared towards an outdoor retreat for friends and family.

A privacy screen of Sweet Viburnum / Viburnum Odoratissimum 5’- 6’ tall was installed along the back and side fences to block the neighbors view from looking into the backyard. Six Wild Date Palm / Phoenix Sylvestris 8′ – 10’ of clear trunk were installed utilizing heavy equipment. Several smaller shrubs and St. Augustine Sod were also installed.

A French drain was installed at the end of the old Chicago brick patio. During heavy rains water was pooling at the edge of the patio. A trench 36” deep by 18” wide by 10’ long was dug and backfilled with drainage rock, 4” corrugated pipe, and drainage fabric. A week after installation we received heavy rains and the French drain worked perfectly.
